Entering Türkiye by Passport: Stays, Rules and Customs
Mainland China (for tourism and transit), Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore and Malaysia passports enter Türkiye visa-free; Taiwan needs an e-Visa. Stays and customs.
Holders of mainland China ordinary passports (since 2 January 2026, for tourism and transit), Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Singapore and Malaysia passports can enter Türkiye without a visa for a limited stay, while Taiwan passport holders need an e-Visa issued at evisa.gov.tr. Whatever the passport, it must stay valid for at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay, visa-free entry never covers work or study, and anyone staying longer must apply for a residence permit before the permitted stay ends.

Entry rules by passport
Mainland China
Since 2 January 2026, ordinary passports of the People's Republic of China are visa-free for tourism and transit, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, under a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on 31 December 2025. The Chinese Embassy in Türkiye advises carrying a printed return ticket, hotel booking, itinerary and proof of funds for passport control. Work and study still need a visa, and whether business visits are covered is not confirmed, so check with a Turkish mission first. Our guide to Turkish visas for Chinese passport holders explains the visa types that still apply.
Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia
Hong Kong SAR passports are visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism and business visits (Hong Kong Immigration Department), Macau SAR passports for up to 30 days, Singapore passports for up to 90 days within any 180-day period and Malaysian passports for up to 90 days. Taiwan passport holders apply for an e-Visa through the official portal evisa.gov.tr only, for stays of up to 30 days; check the entry type and any fee there.
Entry is always at the border officer's discretion. Our comparison of the six passports also covers residence, citizenship and documents for each.
Passport validity and the 90/180 count
The 60-day rule
Under Article 7 of the Law on Foreigners and International Protection (No. 6458), a passport used with a visa, e-Visa, visa exemption or residence permit must remain valid for at least 60 days beyond the permitted stay. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs gives the arithmetic: a 90-day stay needs about 150 days of validity on arrival, a 30-day stay about 90 days. The six-month buffer the Chinese Embassy recommends is the safer choice.
Counting 90 days in any 180
"Any 180-day period" is a rolling window, not a calendar half-year. On any day you are in Türkiye, look back over the previous 180 days: the days spent in the country in that window, across all trips, must not exceed 90. Several short trips can use up the allowance as quickly as one long stay, so keep a simple travel log.
What visa-free entry does not cover
Visa-free entry and the e-Visa are for short visits. Working in Türkiye requires a work permit, and studying requires a student visa followed by a student residence permit.
Staying longer: apply before your stay ends
Göç İdaresi requires anyone staying beyond their visa, visa exemption or 90 days to apply for a residence permit through e-İkamet (e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr):
- Fill in the online application before your permitted stay ends, and complete it within 30 days of starting it.
- Book an appointment at the provincial migration office; in Istanbul and Ankara the date is assigned and sent by SMS or email. Appointments are free.
- Attend on the day with every document; missing the appointment without a valid reason counts as not having applied.
The application document lets you remain lawfully while Göç İdaresi decides, but gives no right to re-enter if you leave in the meantime. Our residence permit service explains the permit categories in Chinese.
Overstaying: fines and entry bans
Göç İdaresi treats staying beyond a visa, visa exemption, residence permit or work permit as a violation of legal stay. Its published statement says:
- An administrative fine under the Fees Law (No. 492), which grows with the length of the overstay, is collected when you leave.
- A foreigner who overstayed by up to three months, comes to the border on their own before being detected and pays the fine is generally not given an entry ban.
- Longer overstays lead to entry bans that lengthen with the overstay, and bans after deportation are stricter. Law No. 6458 caps an entry ban at five years, extendable by up to ten more on serious public-order or security grounds.
- Unpaid fines can block re-entry even after a ban has expired.
Customs: allowances and cash
Duty-free allowances
The Ministry of Trade lets each traveller bring personal belongings plus goods worth up to EUR 430 duty-free (EUR 150 for children under 15), in their own luggage. Quantity limits apply per product, for example 1 litre of drinks above 22% alcohol or 2 litres at or below 22%, and up to 600 ml of perfume plus five skin-care or make-up items. Travellers under 18 cannot use the tobacco or alcohol allowances; check the ministry's page for current tobacco quantities. Commercial samples are declared separately.
Cash and currency
- Arriving: declaring cash is not mandatory, but if you do declare, the declaration must be complete and accurate.
- Leaving: foreign currency above EUR 10,000 or the equivalent must be declared to customs, and Turkish lira above a separate lira threshold must also be declared. Undeclared amounts can be held and reported to the public prosecutor and the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK).
- The EUR 10,000 limit applies per traveller, carried on the person or in their own luggage.
For larger sums, see our article on transferring funds from China to Türkiye.
Arriving in Istanbul: IST and SAW
- Istanbul Airport (IST): on the European side, where Turkish Airlines' nonstop flights from Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and several mainland cities land. The M11 metro links it to Gayrettepe and Kağıthane, and its Halkalı section opened on 20 June 2026; Havaist buses also serve the city.
- Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW): on the Asian side. Since October 2022 the M4 metro has run from the terminal to Kadıköy without a change.
At both, you pass passport control, collect baggage, then clear customs: the red channel if you have goods to declare, the green channel otherwise.
Frequently asked questions
Do mainland Chinese passport holders need a visa for Türkiye?
Not for tourism or transit. Since 2 January 2026, ordinary PRC passports are visa-free for those purposes for up to 90 days in any 180-day period; work, study and other purposes still need the appropriate visa.
How long must my passport be valid to enter Türkiye?
At least 60 days beyond the end of your permitted stay, so about 150 days on arrival for a 90-day stay. Six months is the safer choice.
How are the 90 days in any 180 counted?
As a rolling window. On any day in Türkiye, the days you spent there in the previous 180 days, across all trips, must not exceed 90.
Can I extend a visa-free stay in Türkiye?
No. To stay longer, apply for a residence permit through e-İkamet before your permitted stay ends; the application document lets you remain lawfully while it is decided.
What happens if I overstay in Türkiye?
You pay a fine on departure and may receive an entry ban. Overstays of up to three months, ended voluntarily before detection with the fine paid, generally bring no ban; longer ones bring bans of up to five years.
Do I have to declare cash when entering or leaving Türkiye?
Only when leaving, for foreign currency above EUR 10,000 or the equivalent (Turkish lira has its own threshold). Declaring on arrival is optional, but must be accurate if made.
